The Mental Health of David Harewood
As a devoted family man, the actor is also candid about his life with his wife and children, particularly during the time he suffered a mental breakdown. According to The Telegraph, the actor suffered a psychotic breakdown after graduating from drama school at the age of 23. Harewood did not have hallucinations; rather, he heard voices instructing him to perform acts such as pretending to be Martin Luther King.
He was instructed to “go to Camden, enter a shop at 3 a.m., find a suit, and save the lives of millions of people” during that episode. And he did as instructed, but the shop was, of course, closed. His friends eventually intervened and escorted him to the Whittington hospital after he informed them that “he had three brains in his head and was dying.” He recuperated for the next three months. Harewood has not experienced the symptoms since his recovery, but he continues to see a therapist on a regular basis to manage his illness.
