In January 2011, Goodwillie and his colleague David Robertson were accused of raping a lady named Denise Clair. Goodwillie was charged with rape, but the Crown Office decided not to pursue a criminal case owing to a lack of legal evidence. After determining that Clair had been raped, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority awarded her £11,000.

Clair filed a legal suit against Goodwillie and Robertson in 2016, making it the first case of its sort in Scotland. The court concluded that they individually raped her and ordered them to pay her £100,000 in restitution. Unlike in a Scottish criminal prosecution, the civil case was decided on the basis of the balance of probability and did not need evidence to be corroborated. Soon after the lawsuit was over, Goodwillie departed his club, Plymouth Argyle. According to a club statement, Goodwillie requested to depart because he was contemplating an appeal. The judgment was affirmed by three appeal judges at the Court of Session in November 2017.

  • Goodwillie was noticed playing in a Scottish Youth FA trial in Dundee as a 14-year-old for Carse Thistle in his hometown Stirling before joining Dundee United as a 14-year-old in 2003. Goodwillie joined from Carse Thistle, following in the footsteps of Duncan Ferguson, who had played for the Stirling-based boy’s team.
  • In March 2005, he signed professional papers with United. Goodwillie made his competitive debut for United on December 31, 2005, when he came in as a late replacement in a 2-1 loss to Rangers at Ibrox. Goodwillie came off the bench to score a late goal for United against Hibernian at Easter Road on March 4, 2006, in his sixth game for United.
  • In October 2006, Goodwilie signed a new deal with the club until May 2010 and made his debut against Falkirk. Due to the injuries of other attackers, Goodwillie started twice more under new manager Craig Levein in the next two months.
