On Friday, October 28, 42-year-old David DePape was charged with attacking 82-year-old businessman Paul Pelosi, the husband of Democratic Representative Nancy Pelosi. According to CNN, David DePape reportedly stormed into Pelosi’s San Francisco house at 2 a.m. before hitting Paul Pelosi with a hammer. According to Fox News, police arrived nearly quickly and arrested the guy on several counts, including burglary and attempted murder.
During a news conference on Friday, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott stated:
“The suspect grabbed Mr. Pelosi’s hammer and severely beat him with it.” Our officers promptly grabbed the perpetrator, disarmed him, arrested him, called backup, and administered medical help.”
The San Francisco Police Department was summoned when Paul Pelosi dialed 911 as the suspect turned away. The FBI and Capitol Police are still investigating the crime, according to authorities. The suspect’s motive for the attack is now unclear.

David DePape was reared in Canada until the age of 14, according to the Associated Press. He grew raised in Powell River, British Columbia, before allegedly relocating to San Francisco at the age of 22 to pursue an older woman, finally settling in Berkeley, a college town. Gene DePape, David’s stepfather, expressed amazement when he learned of the suspect’s charges.
He stated:
“David was never aggressive that I saw, and he was never in any trouble, despite the fact that he was quite introverted and played too many video games.”
DePape was described as a hemp jewelry artisan who lived with a nudist activist in a 2013 San Francisco Chronicle story. According to Today News, his internet background reflected both liberal anti-establishment and far-right extremist beliefs, with many of his writings delving into conspiracy theories about communism, vaccinations, and aliens. According to Linda Schneider, a California lady, DePape communicated his thoughts with her over a series of emails.
She stated:
“(David DePape was a) megalomaniac who was completely disconnected from reality.”
She went on:
“(I) stopped interacting with him because it felt so risky.”
Laura Hayes, another California lady, stated:
“He was strange. He didn’t make good eye contact. He communicates with angels, and a difficult period is on the way.”
While San Francisco police have not established why DePape reportedly assaulted Paul Pelosi, they believe his intended target was Nancy Pelosi, 82. When officials arrived at the site, DePape responded to the police report by saying:
“We’re looking for Nancy.”
Nancy Pelosi declared at an official news conference that she plans to charge the suspect. According to the BBC, Paul Pelosi was treated for a broken head as well as injuries to his right arm and hands as a result of the incident.
