Bloom was thirteen when he read an article in Reader’s Digest about the University of Chicago and informed his parents he wanted to attend there. His parents, on the other hand, believed this was unreasonable and did not encourage his dreams.
His parents became acquainted with a surgeon whose son was enrolled in the University of Chicago’s humanities program for gifted children after moving to Chicago in 1944. Bloom started working on his degree when he was fifteen years old, after being admitted to the same program in 1946, and he spent the next 10 years studying there. Since then, his enthusiasm for the University’s “idea” has increased.
