Danny Porush is an American businessman and former stockbroker who was in charge of a stock fraud scheme in the 1990s. The character of Dannie Azoff (played by Jonah Hill) in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ was loosely based on Porush. Porush later told the media that his portrayal in the film was inaccurate.

Danny Porush Biography
Danny Porush was born to a Jewish family in Nassau County in February 1957, and his father was a doctor. He attended Lawrence Woodmere Academy before enrolling in Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and then Boston University, where he did not graduate and was dropped out. Porush later told newspapers in an interview that he was bouncing around from job to job and starting a variety of small businesses at the time.

Porush met his future friend and boss Jordan Belfort through Nancy, his first wife. Nancy first met Belfort when he was already a successful broker and lived in the same building as the Porush family. Nancy asked her husband to introduce her to Belfort, who appeared to be a successful and kind man in New York City. Porush did speak with Belfort, who persuaded him to become a stockbroker.
Porush later took the Series 7 exam to obtain his stockbroker’s license and then joined the firm where Belfort also worked. In the late 1980s, Belfort agreed to join Porush and launch Stratton Oakmont, an OTC brokerage house in Long Island that attempted the classic ‘Pump and Dump’ stock fraud scheme.
It became subject to NSAD disciplinary actions beginning in 1989, and following a federal indictment in 1999, both Belfort and Porush pleaded guilty. Although Jordan was later released on bail, Porush was denied bail and spent 39 months in prison.
