Danny Garcia said in an interview, “I could have been born on the moon, but I am still Puerto Rican.” Even though I was born in Philadelphia, it is not my ancestry.”
Danny felt his Puerto Rican background needed to be acknowledged since the Caribbean island deserved greater recognition in the boxing world. Angel Garcia, the boxer’s father, is from Naguabo, and Maritza Garcia is from Bayamon. Danny previously told The Bleachers Report in 2014 that despite being in the United States and not on the island, Puerto Rican supporters have accepted him. Puerto Rico has always had outstanding boxers, but there was no reigning world champion in 2014. Danny took advantage of this chance to capitalize on his battle with Mauricio Herrera.
Garcia beat Herrera in the bout, which took place in his mother’s birthplace of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Despite widespread belief that Herrera had won the match, the judges preferred Garcia. Danny said before to the bout that he was excited to compete for a championship in Puerto Rico and to represent Puerto Rico in his battle against Herrera and forever on the boxing scene.
