Dan was selected 145th overall in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. On October 12, 2008, he made his first career NFL start in a 12–10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He also started the final game of the 2008 season, but his team was unable to win. On March 1, 2009, he was signed by the Houston Texans.
Furthermore, during the preseason, he was beaten out for the backup quarterback position by Rex Grossman, and he ended up as the Texans’ number three quarterback. The following season, Grossman was traded to the Washington Redskins, and Dan was promoted to backup quarterback.
Dan signed a free-agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts on July 30, 2011. He and the Colts defeated the Titans in their first game of the season (after starting 0–13) on December 18, 2011. On March 15, 2012, he was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Orlovsky was released by the Buccaneers on April 4th of the following year but re-signed with them on April 4th of the following year.
