Colin Powell was born in New York City, New York, on April 5, 1937. Colin Luther Powell was his given name. He was of American ancestry. Powell was of mixed (Jamaican-American) ancestry and was born under the sign of Gemini.

Powell was born in the South Bronx, the son of Jamaican immigrants Maud Ariel and Luther Theophilus Powell. He attended Morris High School and graduated in 1954. Luther worked as a shipping clerk, while Maud worked as a seamstress. Despite his parents’ admonitions to “strive for a good education,” Powell remained an average student throughout high school and never considered himself to be a minority.

Powell worked at a local baby furniture store while in school and later served as a Shabbos goy, assisting Orthodox families. Following his high school graduation, he attended City College of New York and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geology in 1958. He later earned an MBA from George Washington University in 1971 and an Honorary Doctor of Public Service from the University of Georgia in 1990.

He was being treated for blood cancer at the time and had been vaccinated, but his immune system had been compromised by myeloma.

Many of his followers and loved ones are in pain and grief as a result of his death. Even President Joe Biden and four of the five living former presidents paid tribute to Powell via their Twitter posts recognizing him as an American hero.

He was assigned as a platoon leader to the 48th Infantry in West Germany following basic training. He served a year as a South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) advisor during the Vietnam War. Following his return from Vietnam, he held a White House Fellowship from 1972 to 1973 under President Richard Nixon. He served at Fort Carson in the 1980s and then became Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger’s senior military assistant. From 1987 to 1989, he served as the sixteenth national security advisor of the United States. In 1989, he served as Commander of the US Army Forces Command.
He also served as the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s 12th chairman from 1989 to 1993. His service spanned 35 years, with his final military assignment as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which he held from October 1989 to September 1993. Powell founded America’s Promise in 1997 to assist children from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
In 2001, he was appointed as the 65th Secretary of State of the United States during the Bush administration. He became the first African-American Secretary of State in the position. He was forced to resign following Bush’s 2004 reelection. In 2006, he spoke at a series of motivational events dubbed Get Motivated.
