While he was there, Peters received a letter from the FBI accusing him of draft evasion. Peters relocated to London in 1973 and changed his name to Clarke Peters due to the fact that Equity already had a few namesake members.
While living in London, he founded The Majestics, a soul band, and worked as a backup singer on Joan Armatrading’s “Love and Affection,” Heatwave’s “Boogie Nights,” and a few David Essex songs. On the other hand, Peters was uninterested in music and desired employment in the theater.
His first West End musical roles were in I Gotta Shoe (1976) and Bubbling Brown Sugar (1977), which he obtained with the assistance of his friend Ned Sherrin (1977). Among his other West End credits are Blues in the Night, Porgy and Bess, The Witches of Eastwick, Chicago, and Chess. In Sean Connery’s space Western Outland (1981), Peters played the ruthless Sgt.
