Clarence Carter’s professional music career began when he was introduced to Calvin Scott, a friend. As Clarence & Calvin, they sang to the Fairlane label to get “I Wanna Dance But I Don’t Know How” released. Following the publication of I Don’t Know in 1962, the two joined Duke Records. As a result, they rebranded themselves the C & C Boys and signed to the label, releasing four singles.
Rick Hall’s FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals was where the duo recorded “Step by Step” in 1965. As a result, it was released on the Atco label, which is owned by Atlantic Records, although it failed to chart.
At Birmingham, Alabama, the duo performed regularly in bars in 1966. Scott was later critically hurt in a car accident. Carter also continued to record for the Fame label as a solo artist. In 1967, he released “Tell Daddy,” which peaked at number 35 on the Billboard R&B chart. Carter was also acknowledged as the writer for Etta James’ response album, “Tell Mama.” He then moved on to Atlantic Records at the end of 1967.
Then, starting with “Slip Away,” he launched a streak of R&B and mainstream chart smashes. As a result, it’s been dubbed “a superior infidelity ballad highlighting his pain.” The Recording Industry Association of America recognized his singles before to signing with Atlantic as Gold.
