Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer was born in the Canadian city of Toronto. He is the only child of Isabella Mary (Abbott), a secretary to the Dean of Sciences at McGill, and John Orme Plummer, a stockbroker. He is a great-grandson of Canada’s third Prime Minister, John Abbott (from 1891 to 1892), and a great-great-great-grandson of Anglican priest John Bethune. He is of Scottish, English, and Anglo-Irish descent. Plummer grew up in Senneville, Quebec, near Montreal.
He spoke English and French well. He started studying to be a concert pianist as a kid, but he acquired an early sensibility for theater and began performing while still in high school in Montreal. He acquired the foundations of acting as a student at the Montreal Repertory Theatre.

Plummer made his professional debut in Ottawa in 1950 and spent many years working with Canadian regional theatre organizations. He made his New York City debut in 1954 and received widespread critical acclaim. In 1955, he joined the American Shakespeare Festival Company in Stratford, Connecticut, swiftly establishing himself as a major Shakespearean actor and appearing throughout repertory in Canada, England, and the United States. His nonclassical roles included The Dark Is Light Enough (1955), The Lark (1955), Arturo Ui (1963), The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1965), and The Good Doctor (1965). (1973).
He returned to Shakespeare in 1981 to portray Iago in James Earl Jones’s Othello. Plummer received Tony Awards for his performances in Cyrano (1974) and Barrymore (1976). (1997).
