Nkunku’s football journey to date
Nkunku’s family’s sport is football. He became interested in football after witnessing his father and elder brother play as children. When he misbehaved, his father would tell him that he may go to school but not to training, which encouraged young Nkunku to work on it from an early age. He began playing football with AS Marolles at the age of six. With an ambition of playing for a top club, he tried out for Lens, Le Havre, and Monaco, but all three rejected him because he was too young and light. He enrolled in the Fontainebleau youth school when he was 12 years old.
The next year, he joined Paris Saint-academy, Germain’s where he quickly excelled and was enrolled into INF Clairefontaine’s juvenile teams at the U-15 level. Cedric Cattenoy, his former PSG junior coach, described him as a late development who was brilliant despite his diminutive stature. Nkunku was promoted to PSG’s B squad after two excellent years at Clairefontaine, where he thrived under young coach Francois Rodrigues. Rodrigues described Nkunku as a youngster who, despite his diminutive stature, was tremendously brilliant.
Nkunku made his senior debut in December 2015, at the age of 18. With the arrival of Unai Emery in 2016, his chances were restricted, although he managed to score against Lorient in 2017. He scored 11 goals in 78 appearances for PSG before joining RB Leipzig in 2019. Nkunku said that he selected Leipzig because it was his Dream project at the time. After scoring a hat-trick for Leipzig in their 6-3 defeat to Manchester City in the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League group stage match, he became the club’s first player in history to score a hat-trick in the Champions League in September 2021. In 34 league games, he scored 20 goals and assisted on 13 others, earning him the 2021-22 Bundesliga player of the season honor.
Nkunku’s nomination for the French national team was a dream come true.
Nkunku has been awaiting his first call-up to the French national squad for some time. Nkunku said in a 2021 interview that he had no touch with France national team coach Didier Deschamps till then. He further said that if he continued to perform in a way, the coach would be unable to overlook him. As he said, his outstanding performance enabled him to realize his ambition. In March, he was nominated for the first time.
Nkunku said that he was at home with his family when he watched his nomination on television and that everyone was overjoyed. For him, it was a dream come true. On March 25, 2022, he made his senior France debut against Ivory Coast, and on March 29, 2022, he made his debut against South Africa.
