Christopher Luxon has been on the boards of Virgin Australia and Tourism New Zealand. He spent eighteen years at Unilever, finally rising to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Unilever’s Canadian operations.
Luxon joined Air New Zealand in May 2011 and was named CEO on June 19, 2012, succeeding Rob Fyfe who retired at the end of that year. During his eight-year tenure as CEO, Air New Zealand’s profits reached all-time highs, and the firm was awarded Australia’s most trusted brand multiple times.
The worker’s unions Aviation and Marine Engineers Association and E t strongly criticized Luxon and Air New Zealand in 2018 over a salary dispute. The unions had planned a three-day strike around the same year’s Christmas, but the parties negotiated an agreement and the walkout was called off. Luxon announced his resignation from Air New Zealand on June 20, 2019, and hinted to a prospective career with the National Party.

He beat out National Party list MP Agnes Loheni, Howick Local Board chair Katrina Bungard, cancer drug advocate Troy Elliott, and computer entrepreneur Jake Bezzant, who was later chosen as National’s candidate for Upper Harbour.
Luxon won the seat in the 2020 New Zealand general election by 3,999 votes over Labour’s candidate Naisi Chen. Luxon commended Martin Luther King Jr. and Kate Sheppard in his inaugural speech as part of a defense of the role of Christians in public life, such as himself, an identity that he claimed “seems to have become acceptable to stereotype.”
It was widely assumed that Luxon would become the National Party’s leader, which he refuted prior to his candidacy. Luxon was mentioned as a possible replacement for Judith Collins after her departure as party leader on November 25, 2021. Following the departure of his main opponent, Simon Bridges, he became leader on November 30, 2021.
Political opinions
Christopher Luxon stated his opposition to the death penalty, abortion, euthanasia, and the legalization of recreational cannabis in November 2019. Simultaneously, he advocated for medicinal cannabis and a “no jab, no pay” policy to penalize welfare recipients who do not vaccinate their children.
Luxon himself is a Christian and has spoken out against liberal ideas such as abortion rights and cannabis legalization.
