Chief Keef was born on August 15, 1995, in Chicago, Illinois, to Alfonzo Cozart and Lolita Carter. He was raised by his grandmother in Chicago’s Washington Park neighborhood. His mother died when he was 16 years old, so no information about his father is available; he got his name from his deceased uncle.

He began rapping at a young age, using his mother’s karaoke machine to record music. He attended Dulles Elementary School, Banner Middle School, and Dyett High School before dropping out at the age of 15 and receiving his diploma.

After dropping out of school, he began to gain community recognition with his mixtapes titled “The Glory Road and Band.” In 2011, he was charged with unlawful use of a weapon after firing gunshots from a Pontiac Grand Prix, and he was placed under house arrest for two months at his grandmother’s house.

Chief Keef began rapping at the age of five, using his mother’s karaoke machine and borrowing blank tapes from friends and neighbors to create music. He rose to prominence primarily through the music videos he posted on YouTube. He was more popular among high school students in the early years of his career. He released ‘the glory road’ and ‘Bang’ in 2011, followed by ‘Back from the Dead’ by glory boyz in March 2012.

He later released ‘I Don’t Like,’ for which Kanye West remixed. Interscope Records released the ‘Finally, rich’ album in December 2012, with the singles ‘I Love Sosa’ and ‘Hate Bein’ Sober’ peaking at #29 on the Billboard 200. It featured Wiz Khalifa, 50 Cent, Master P, and French Montana. Keef signed with Gucci Mane’s 1017 Records in early 2013.
