Sonnen began his mixed martial arts career in 1997. He was 19 years old at the time. In Vancouver, Washington, he defeated Ben Hailey. Jason “Mayhem” Miller was the next to succumb to him. His first defeat came in his seventh fight, when he faced Trevor Prangley. He also lost to Forrest Griffin in 2003.
