Carlos Salinas Biography
Carlos Salinas was born on April 3, 1948. His father was the Minister of Commerce and Industry under Adolfo Lopez Mateo. He is the second of five children born to Raul Salinas Lozano, a government official and economist, and Margarita De Gortari De Salinas.
On December 18, 1951, while playing with his older brother and an eight-year-old friend, they discovered a loaded rifle, and one of them shot and killed Salinas family maid Manuela; the incident was declared an accident, and a judge blamed their parents for leaving a loaded weapon in reach of their children.
He studied at Mexico’s National Autonomous University. He majored in economics. Carlos was active in the PRI youth movement, and his friends in a political club remained close to him even after he became president. Carlos graduated from Harvard University with a master’s degree. In 1978, he received his Ph.D.

He became the PRI’s presidential candidate at a difficult time for the party, facing significant opposition for the first time.
