Butterbean was born on August 3, 1966, in Atlanta, Georgia, but moved with his family to St. Johns, Michigan, when he was four years old, and then to Jasper, Alabama, when he was eleven years old. He had a tough childhood; his mother died when he was eight years old, and he was regularly tormented at school because he was overweight.
His friends dared him to enter a neighboring Toughman Contest, with training in Bay City, Michigan, while he was working on the floors for manufacturing houses at the Southern Energy Homes company in Addison, Alabama. He won the tournament and began his fighting career as a result.
