Career

Olney started covering baseball as a beat writer for the Nashville Banner’s Triple-A Nashville Sounds in 1989. He developed a strong friendship with the great Don Meyer, Head Coach of the men’s basketball team, at David, Lipscomb University. Olney formerly worked for the San Diego Union-Tribune and the Baltimore Sun.

He joined the Times in 1997 and received an Associated Press award in his first year. Olney nearly had a mini issue with Deion Sanders, a Yankee prospect renowned more for his football skills at the time. Buster Olney sought to do a story on Sanders but was turned down. In response, Olney published what he deemed a critical essay on Sanders later in his career. Olney is responded to by Sanders writing on a baseball. “If you keep writing like that your whole life, you’ll always be a loser.”

In 2004, Olney released The Final Night of the Yankee Dynasty, ISBN 0-06-051506-6, a factual chronicle of the Yankees’ championship run in the 1990s. The book also examined why the club was eliminated by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2001 World Series and why it failed to win a title between 2001 and 2003. After all, Olney has become a fixture on the ESPN family of networks since leaving the Times.

In 2010, Olney published How Lucky You Can Be: The Story of Coach Don Meyer, an account of how a car accident and cancer diagnosis altered the life of the popular collegiate basketball coach. Olney delivered the May Commencement Address at Northern State University in 2013, where Meyer coached until 2010 and remained on teaching until his death on May 18, 2014.
