Burney began driving go-karts when he was five years old. He began driving stock cars at Stockton 99 Raceway when he was 16 years old. The following year, he entered and competed in a variety of club series, including the USAC Western States Sprint Car Series, West Coast Tracks, NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Southwest Series, and others. In 2005, Lamar joined with Kevin Harvick Enterprises and began racing in the NASCAR Busch Series, Craftsman Truck Series, and NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series.
