Brit Hume was born to Virginia Powell Hume and George Graham Hume in 1943. He was born in Washington, D.C. . From his father’s side, he is of Scottish descent.
He is partially descended from George Home, son of the tenth Baron of Wedderburn, who emigrated to Virginia as a result of the First Jacobite Rebellion.

Brit Hume began his career by working for The Hartford Times newspaper, then for United Press International and the Baltimore Evening Sun. Later, from 1970 to 1972, he worked for syndicated journalist Jack Anderson.
Hume told Anderson’s “Washington Merry-Go-Round” column that after ITT Corporation donated $400,000 to the 1972 Republican National Convention, President Richard Nixon’s Department of Justice established an antitrust case against ITT.
Anderson is known to have released a series of classified documents demonstrating that, contrary to public declarations, the Nixon administration favored Pakistan throughout the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.
Following the disclosures, Anderson and his staff, which included Hume and his family, were quickly measured by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1972.
