Rod, his father, was the head basketball trainer at Illinois from 1973 to 2003. Brian grew up with his parents and two siblings, Troy Cardinal and Lisa Cardinal. Cardinal was a fan of the Chicago Bulls when he was younger. He has excelled in public speaking since he was a toddler.

He scored three points and grabbed four rebounds in his first game. Cardinal also played in only 15 games in his debut season. He also had a game average of 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds. Cardinal was traded to the Washington Wizards on September 11, 2002. He was only waived after five games, though. Nonetheless, he finished the season with Parmesan Valencia. Cardinal was also awarded the ULEB Cup.
