Bret Hart was born on July 2, 1957, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He is a member of the well-known Hart Family. His father, WWE Hall of Famer Stu Hart, has trained many famous wrestlers including Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, and Edge. Bret was also trained in Hart Dungeon by his father.
He was an amateur wrestler while in school. Bret began his career with Stampede Wrestling, a promotion owned by Stu Hart. He also wrestled in New Japan Pro Wrestling for a short time.

Bret Hart joined the WWE in 1984 and founded the Hart Foundation with his brother-in-law, Jim Neidhart. They defeated the British Bulldogs in their first tag team championships. Bret concentrated on singles championships after the team split up in the 1990s. In 1991, he defeated Mr Perfect in the Intercontinental Championship. In 1992, he defeated Ric Flair to win his first WWE Championship.
Bret won the King of the Ring twice, in 1991 and 1993, becoming the only wrestler to do so. He had a long and bitter feud with Jerry Lawler over the title of King. He also had major feuds with his brother Owen and Yokozuna. He lost the title to Bob Buckland in 1994, and Owen was to blame. Despite regaining the title, he was defeated by Shawn Michaels again. He had major feuds with Stone Cold, The Undertaker, and Sycho Sid, but his real-life feud with Vince began at the same time.
Bret left the WWE for WCW after Vince let Michaels beat him in the famous Montreal Screwjob incident.
