Breel Embolo was born on February 14, 1997, in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. When he was young, his parents split up, and when he was five or six, his mother moved to France to go to school. She met her future husband, a Swiss citizen, while she was there. The family moved to Basel the following year. On December 12, 2014, he became a Swiss citizen. His girlfriend Naomi gave birth to their daughter Naliya in June 2018.
In 2013, he joined Basel, a team in the Swiss Super League. This was the first time he played football professionally. During his three years at Basel, he played 91 games and scored 31 goals.
