Brantley Gilbert relocated to Nashville and signed with Warner Chappell Publishing, where he continued to play in local venues. On October 27, 2009, he released his first album, Modern Day Prodigal Son, via the indie label Average Joes Entertainment. On March 16, 2010, he released his second album, Halfway to Heaven, under the same label. In 2011, he signed with Valory Music Co., a part of Big Machine Records, and re-released Halfway to Heaven with fresh recordings and tunes.

Its first two songs, “Country Must Be Country Wide” and “You Don’t Know Her As I Do,” have reached the top of the Hot Country Songs list. Kick It in the Sticks and More Than Miles came in at No. 34 and No. 7 on Country Airplay, respectively. In 2013, he received the ACM New Male Artist Award.
