Real Madrid soccer prodigy Brahim Diaz’s religion has remained a secret to his admirers. Many say he follows Islam because of his father’s ties to Morocco. The soccer player’s name is another strong indication of his faith, and his four younger sisters also have Arabic names. Some of Diaz’s followers claim that his father, Sufiel, has Rifi ancestry and is not Arab.
Born and reared in Malaga, Brahim turned down Morocco’s invitation to compete in the 2018 World Cup. He made his international debut for Spain in 2021 but switched allegiances last year and chose to play for Morocco. After going from City to Real Madrid in 2019, the 24-year-old returned to Madrid last year after a three-year loan spell at AC Milan. The soccer player hails from a culturally diverse household. His father, Sufiel Abdelkader, is from Melilla, a Spanish city in North Africa. Melilla is one of the cities impacted by Moroccan culture, with the majority supporting the Muslim community. In 2021, Christianity was estimated to be the second most practiced religion in Melilla, behind Islam. Diaz’s mother, Patricia Diaz, is from Malaga, a Spanish city where the majority of the population practices Roman Catholicism. But the soccer player’s name, “Brahim,” has Arabic origins. It is a short form of Ibrahim, the Arabic name for Abraham. Sufiel Abdelkader and Patricia Abdelkader Diaz have just one son. He has four younger sisters named Zaira, Idaira, Dunia, and Irina. Sufiel began working as a soccer agent in 2019 and became the Director of Sports&Life Group the following year.
His parents were previously featured in a video sent to Real Madrid’s YouTube channel. The film, titled “The Brahim Story: Fulfilling his Real Madrid Dream!” features Diaz’s parents, relatives, and instructors discussing his brilliance from a young age. Sufiel says in the video that soccer has always been a part of his family’s life. Malaga FC approached Diaz after noticing his skill on the field. Sufiel was first apprehensive to let his son into the soccer world, but he and Patricia eventually decided to allow Brahim to join the Spanish Club. Sufiel and Patricia’s delight is evident in the video when Brahim is unveiled as a Real Madrid player.
Sufiel, Brahim’s father, was just 17 when he and Patricia had their first child. Sufiel formerly played soccer for Mortadelo, one of Malaga’s classic youth clubs. When he was three years old, he moved from Melilla to Mortadeolo. Sufiel’s agency, Sports&Life Group, now represents 36 athletes. Along with Brahim, Leeds United’s left-back Junior Firpo and soccer icon Andres Iniesta are both represented by the agency.
