Roberta Lee Streeter was born on July 27, 1942. Ruby Lee (née Shipman) and Robert Harrison Streeter gave birth to her. Her mother moved to California shortly after Gentry was born, and her parents split. The responsibility for parenting her fell on her paternal grandparents. At her grandparents’ home, neither electricity nor plumping existed.
Her grandma acquired a piano by selling a milk cow to a neighbor. When Gentry was seven years old, she created her first composition. My Dog Sergeant is a Good Dog was the title of the song. Later, she spent some time living with her father in Greenwood, Mississippi. She picked up guitar and banjo skills while living with her father.
