Bill Withers was born in a small coal-mining town in West Virginia, the youngest of five siblings. He wasn’t perfect as a child because he was born with a stutter and struggled to fit in. He was raised in Beckley, and when his father died, he was only 13 years old. He then joined the Navy at the age of 18 and served his country for nine years, where he overcame his stutter and became interested in singing and songwriting.

In 1965, he left the US Navy. In 1967, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a singing career, and he later worked as an assembler for several companies, during which time he recorded his demo tapes. He didn’t resign after making his debut with the song “Ain’t No Sunshine” because he used to believe that the music industry was a volatile one.
