Bill Haslam was born on August 23, 1958, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Jim Haslam and Cynthia (Allen), the founders of Pilot Corporation, the parent company of the convenience store and. His father, Jim Haslam, was a Republican Party fundraiser and a University of Tennessee sponsor and trustee for many years.
Haslam attended Knoxville’s Webb School and was involved in the Christian organization Young Life. Haslam later attended Emory University, earning a bachelor’s degree in history in 1980. He is a member of the Sigma Chi International Fraternity’s Beta Sigma chapter.
As a teenager, Haslam began working part-time in his father’s company.
