Bennet was born on September 30, 1968, in Nnokwa, Idemili South, Anambra. His father was a civil mining engineer and a community leader, and his mother worked as a seamstress. Bennet was the sixth of the family’s seven children. The family is of Igbo descent, the dominant ethnic group in Enugu-Ukwu village in southeastern Nigeria. He has been alive for 55 years.

Bennet Omalu Career
As a physician, Omalu pursued both his education and his career. While furthering his education, he also worked as a doctor. In 1999, he interned at the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office under noted pathologist Cyril Wecht. It was during this time that he developed a keen interest in Neurology. Later that year, he was appointed chief medical examiner for San Joaquin County, California. He did, however, resign in 2017. As he walked away, he accused the county sheriff of interfering with death investigations on numerous occasions.
Omalu examined Mike Webster’s body in September 2002 while working at the coroner’s office. Mike was a former professional football player who died suddenly at the age of 50. For several years, the Pittsburgh Steelers player struggled with depression as well as cognitive and intellectual impairment.
Omalu discovered large accumulations of tau protein in Webster’s brain after careful examination. A buildup of impaired cognitive function. He suspected Webster had dementia pugilistica, a condition previously identified in boxers.
A few years later, in 2005, Omalu and his colleagues from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Pathology published a paper titled “Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in a National Football League Player” in the medical journal “Neurosurgery.”

The NFL’s Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) Committee demanded a retraction in response to his findings published in the journal. They even called Omalu’s research “flawed.” Omalu, on the other hand, did not abandon his work. He went on to examine Terry Long, who had committed suicide at the age of 45. He discovered the same buildup of tau proteins in this former football player’s brain.
Following that, he received backing from Dr. Julian Bailes, chairman of neurosurgery at West Virginia University School of Medicine. A former Steelers team physician agreed to participate in his research as well. Omalu, along with Bailes and lawyer Bob Fitzsimmons, founded the Sports Legacy Institute to further CTE research.
After years of study and struggle, he finally received some recognition in March of 2016. Jeff Miller, the NFL’s senior vice president of health and safety policy, testified that there was a link between football and CTE.
