Ben McKenzie was born on September 12, 1978, in Austin, Texas. He is descended from Scottish, Dutch-Jewish, and English ancestors. He is one of three children born to Pieter Meade Schenkkan and Frances Victory Schenkkan. His father was a lawyer, and his mother was a poet. His paternal grandmother took the surname ‘McKenzie.’ His grandfather taught at the University of Texas at Austin. He also collaborated with President Lyndon B. Johnson on revising the Public Broadcasting Act in 1967.
