Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr. is the son of Robert Solomon Carson and Sonya Carson, who had him in the state of Michigan in 1951. He and his brother were raised by their mother after their parents divorced when he was eight years old.

Carson attended several schools, including Fisher Elementary, Higgins Elementary, Wilson Junior High, Hunter Junior High, and Southwestern High School, where he graduated third in his class. He enrolled at Yale University, where he earned a B.A. in psychology.

Carson enrolled at the University of Michigan Medical School in 1973 and received his M.D. in 1977. This would lead him to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he would serve as a surgical intern, then as a neurosurgery resident for five years, finishing his final year as chief resident in 1983.

After graduating from Johns Hopkins Hospital, he worked as a senior registrar at Sir Chares Gairdner Hospital for a year before returning to Johns Hopkins University as the director of Pediatric Neurosurgery. He specialized in brain injuries, epilepsy, brain tumors, and other neurological disorders as a neurosurgeon. He rose to prominence after successfully separating the world’s first pair of conjoined twins, among many other accomplishments.
