He began his professional wrestling career after graduating from college. As a university amateur wrestler, he competed in the 174-pound weight class during his college wrestling career. He won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championship match in 2006 and 2007, following consecutive defeats in the same competition in 2004 and 2005. He is still the NCAA single-season pin record holder.
In addition, he won gold medals at the Big 12 Championships in 2006 and 2007. In the 2006-2007 season, he went undefeated with a 42-0 record. He also won the Big 12 Conference Championship in 2004, 2006, and 2007.
