At Oregon, Dan Steele Eaton was coached by a former decathlete. Steele improved Eaton’s 1500 m, hurdles, high jump, and pole vault. He improved his pole vault by 1.2 m in one year and scored 8,000 points in his sixth collegiate decathlon. After Steele left for Northern Iowa in 2010, Eaton was coached by decathlon coach Harry Marra.

Eaton won the 2008 NCAA decathlon. Eaton won the 2009 NCAA decathlon with 8,241 points. He won the 2009 NCAA Indoor Heptathlon with 5,988 points. Eaton won the 2009 Division I field title.

Eaton broke the heptathlon world record at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships. In 2010, he won his third straight NCAA decathlon title with 8,457 points. He was the first man to win three straight decathlons.

Eaton finished fifth overall at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. Eaton finished second in the decathlon at the 2009 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In 2009, he qualified for and finished 18th at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

Eaton set a heptathlon world record in Tallinn in February 2011. Despite a poor high jump, he scored 6568 points. Eaton placed second in the decathlon at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, losing to compatriot Trey Hardee.

Eaton set a new world record in the heptathlon at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul. He won five of seven events (60 m, 60 m hurdles, long jump, pole vault, 1000 m) and placed third in the others (high jump and shot put).
