Mohammad Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai (born May 19, 1949) is an Afghan politician, educator, and economist who served as the fifth president of Afghanistan and the second and last president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan from September 2014 until August 2021, when his administration was deposed.

Ashraf Ghani was born on May 19, 1949, in Logar Province, Afghanistan, to Shah Pesand, a clerical worker, and Kawbaba Lodin, a Kandahar native. He is from the Ahmadzai Pashtun tribe.
He was a foreign exchange student at Lake Oswego High School (LOHS) in Lake Oswego, Oregon, during the 1966-1967 school year, going by the names Ashraf Ahmad and Ashraf Ahmad Zai. The American Field Service sponsored his foreign exchange stay. He was a member of the student council.
Apart from his exchange year, he completed his secondary education in Kabul. He planned to study law at first but then switched to cultural anthropology. Ghani co-founded the Institute for State Effectiveness with Clare Lockhart after leaving Kabul University, and he served as its chairman. The institution proposed a structure in which the state would carry out 10 duties in order to assist its inhabitants. This paradigm was addressed by post-conflict transition leaders and managers in a conference sponsored by the UN and World Bank in September 2005. The concept recommended that double compacts between the international community, a country’s government, and its people be utilized to organize assistance and other initiatives and that a yearly sovereignty index be developed to gauge state performance.
In a front-page feature in the Financial Times at the end of 2006[30], he was mentioned as a contender to replace Kofi Annan as Secretary-General of the United Nations, adding, “I aim to win, through ideas.” The Brookings Institution’s Carlos Pascual was also reported, praising Ghani’s “tremendous intelligence, skill, and potential.”
