On Saturday, September 9, 2023, a 13-year-old kid named Anthony Stinson was hit by a Suffolk County Patrol cruiser in Shirley. Claudia, the teen’s mother, later informed News12 that her son died on Monday as a result of his injuries.
As news of Anthony Stinson’s death spread, Stephanie Byrnes, who met Anthony while camping with her a few years back, created a GoFundMe account for the 13-year-old. The fundraiser’s goal is to achieve $2,000, and as of this writing, it has received $1,271 from 32 contributors.
Stinson was critically injured after being hit by a police patrol car while riding his bicycle on Saturday night. According to News12, the collision occurred near the intersection of William Floyd Parkway and Adobe Drive.
GoFundme raises more than $1,200 in wake of police vehicle tragedy
To assist the family during this difficult time, a GoFundMe fundraising page has been established to assist the Stinson family in covering the costs of Anthony’s funeral and other related expenditures.
Dana Glaber, a former coworker of Anthony’s mother, Claudia, created the fundraising website.
“Anthony was Claudia’s only child, and she desperately needs all of our help and prayers right now,” Glaber wrote on the GoFundMe page. “All donations will go directly to his mother, Claudia Stinson, to cover any expenses she may incur as a result of this tragedy.”
As of 9 p.m. on Tuesday, the GoFundMe campaign had raised approximately $10,000. More than 220 gifts and emotional remarks have come in.
The crash is still under investigation.
Suffolk County officials provided light on the crash, stating that the officer driving the patrol car had the lights and siren turned on. They were apparently responding to an emergency call.
According to detectives, the police officer ended up hitting three other automobiles as they swerved to save the child.
