Angela Rye was born into a mixed family; her father, Eddie Rye, is of African-American descent, and her mother, Andre Rye, is of Caucasian descent. She was born in Seattle, Washington, and grew up in the Madrona neighborhood. Her brother is Brian Rye, and her father is a community activist in Seattle.
She began her education at Holy Names Academy, an all-girls school in Seattle, and graduated from there to attend the University of Washington. She continued her education by enrolling in the Seattle University School of Law, from which she graduated in 2005.
