Career

In 1994, he abandoned his studies in sports science and moved to Asia to become a Buddhist monk. He traveled to India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Australia, and Russia to practice meditation, culminating in total ordination in a Tibetan monastery in India’s Himalayas. Puddicombe returned to Russia after finishing a one-year meditation program in Scotland, where he spent four years studying meditation in Moscow. He departed the monastic commitment after four years. In 2004, he returned to the United Kingdom to study Circus Arts in London. At the same time, he was beginning his own private meditation practice in town. Through his private practice, Andy tried to make meditation and mindfulness accessible, meaningful, and useful to as many people as possible.

Puddicombe established a private meditation practice in 2006 and worked as a mindfulness teacher for the following four years. He also adopted the terminology and procedures he had previously learned. He met Rich Pierson, his future business partner and co-founder of Headspace, at the time. Puddicombe gave a TED lecture titled ‘All It Takes Is 10 Mindful Minutes,’ in which he discussed the benefits of practicing mindfulness every day. It has received 7 million views to date and was one of the first TED Talks to be featured on Netflix.

Andy had written three novels. The books are currently available in ten languages and 25 countries.
