Career
Obrador majored in political science during his undergraduate studies. Obrador later took a break from his studies to participate in politics. In 1987, he was a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Tabasco. Obrador’s first public position was as director of the Indigenous Institute of Tabasco in 1977. He promoted the edition of books in the indigenous language. He also created the chontal ridge project. Obrador joined the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) in 1989.
He was also the party’s candidate for Governor of Tabasco in 1994.
He was also the PRD’s national leader between 1996 and 1999. In the year 2000, he was elected President of Mexico City. He did, however, leave the PRD in 2012. In 2014, he founded the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA). He was in charge of this until 2017. Obrador is frequently referred to as a populist and a nationalist. Furthermore, he has been a nationally influential politician for over two decades.
Obrador ran in the 2018 presidential election for the third time, representing Juntos Haremos Historia. He won the election with a landslide, receiving 53 percent of the vote.
