Top 20 Quotes of Aldous Huxley

Aldous Huxley

After a serious illness left him partially blind as a child, Aldous Huxley decided to pursue a literary career instead of becoming a scientist. In 1916, he graduated with honors from Oxford University’s Balliol College and published a collection of poems. Crome Yellow, his debut novel, was published five years later, and it brought him his first taste of success. He then published several more equally successful satirical novels before releasing his most famous work, Brave New World. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, with a dark vision of the future. Huxley moved to the United States in 1937 and continued to write novels, nonfiction, screenplays, and essays for the rest of his life.

Aldous Huxley was born on July 26, 1894, in Godalming, England. His grandfather, the noted biologist and naturalist T. H. Huxley was an early proponent of Darwin’s theory of evolution. His father, Leonard, was a teacher and writer, and his mother, Julia, was a descendent of Matthew Arnold. Julian and Andrew Huxley both became biologists as adults, and Huxley envisioned a career in science as a child.

Huxley’s life would be turned upside down by tragedy while he was still a child. His mother died of cancer in 1908, and he was blinded by the disease keratitis punctata in 1911. Huxley regained some sight but remained half blind and had trouble reading. Huxley abandoned his plans to become a physicist at Eton to pursue writing. In 1914, Huxley suffered another setback when his brother Noel committed suicide after a long period of depression.
