Career
- He started racing at the age of 18 in 1957, largely in modified roadsters, sprint cars, and midgets. He competed in the Indianapolis 500 for the first time in 1965, finishing tenth. He won the Indy 500 two years after his brother, Bobby, in 1970. He led for all but 10 of the race’s 200 laps and averaged 155.749 miles per hour (250.654 km/h). His rapid pit stops contributed to his triumph.
- Unser won the IROC championship in 1978. He also raced in the 1968 Daytona 500 and four additional NASCAR Winston Cup & Grand National races staged on road circuits, finishing fourth in all of them (twice).
- Unser won the IndyCar championships in 1983 and 1985 by winning one race and finishing in the top five in numerous others. When colleague Rick Mears recovered from major injuries in 1986, Penske opted to concentrate the team’s attention on him.
Unser Death
Unser had familial hemochromatosis, which led to his diagnosis of liver cancer in 2004 and the removal of a tumor and half of his liver in 2005. He battled cancer for the next 17 years until passing away on December 9, 2021, at the age of 82, at his home in Chama, New Mexico.
