Akbar Al Baker was born in the Indian city of Mumbai. He attended St. Peter’s School, a residential school in the Panchgani hills of Maharashtra, India, as a child. He eventually relocated to Mumbai, where he attended Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics. He is a licensed private pilot.

Career

In 1997, Al-Baker was appointed CEO of Qatar Airways. Prior to this position, he served at Qatar’s Civil Aviation Directorate. He was previously the Chairman of the Qatar Tourism Authority. He is the CEO of Qatar Executive, Qatar Airways Holidays, Qatar Aviation Services, Qatar Duty Free Company, Doha International Airport, Internal Media Services, Qatar Distribution Company, and Qatar Aircraft Catering Company.

Al-Baker oversaw the construction of Hamad International Airport, which began operations in May 2014 and is now home to Qatar Airways. In 2017, the airport handled all inbound and outgoing flights from Doha.

Al Baker announced in June 2019 that Qatar Airways would acquire a share in a sixth offshore carrier before the end of the year. The business hasn’t been named yet, but it will join the International Airlines Group, LATAM Airlines Group, Cathay Pacific, and China Southern Airlines Co.

Al-Baker is a member of the Arab Air Carriers Organization’s Executive Committee, the International Air Transport Association’s Board of Governors, and a non-executive director of Heathrow Airport Holdings.
