Abraham Maslow was a psychologist from the United States who developed a hierarchy of needs to explain human motivation. According to his theory, people have several basic needs that must be met before moving up the hierarchy to pursue more social, emotional, and self-actualizing needs.
Abraham Maslow was born on April 1, 1908, in Brooklyn, New York, the first of seven children born to his Russian-born Jewish parents. Later in life, Maslow described his early childhood as unhappy and lonely. He spent a lot of time in the library, surrounded by books.
Maslow attended City College of New York and majored in law (CCNY). He transferred to the University of Wisconsin after developing an interest in psychology and finding a mentor in psychologist Harry Harlow, who served as his doctoral advisor. Maslow received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in psychology from the University of Wisconsin.
