Career
Serge began his basketball career at a very young age. Avenir du Rail was his first club. He developed an interest in basketball as a way to cope with the untimely death of his mother and his father’s captivity during the ‘Second Congo War.’ Serge traveled to France from Congo at the age of 17 and played basketball for a second division team before relocating to Spain. Serge learnt himself Spanish after relocating to Spain. He began playing professionally with a second division basketball club, ‘CB L’ Hospitalet’, shortly after his transfer to the foreign country.
Serge is the first player from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to be selected for the NBA draft. In 2008, Ibaka traveled to several foreign showcases, where he gained fame. Additionally, he won the MVP award at the Reebok Euro camp and garnered the attention of NBA scouts. The Seattle SuperSonics originally drafted him as the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 24th pick in the 2008 NBA draft. Later that season, he signed a three-year contract with Ricoh Manresa of Spain’s ABC League, potentially transferring to the NBA following each season.
Ibaka, despite his inexperience in the NBA, had established himself as a starter in the Thunder rotation. He agreed to a two-year deal with the ‘Oklahoma City Thunder’ (2009-2010). With seven blocks in game two in Los Angeles, he set a record (the youngest player to have 7 blocks in a playoff game).
