The move of Raheem Sterling to Barcelona is gaining momentum. His profile is appealing to the club, and he is enticed by the prospect of playing at Camp Nou. However, for that to happen, all three parties involved (Barça, Manchester City, and Sterling) must first reach a financial agreement.
That will not be easy. Even if City picks up half of the England international’s salary. Barça would still be obligated to pay the remaining half. Given that he earns close to 18 million euros per season, Barça would need to invest 9 million. In that case, no other January signing would be possible. As a result, Barça is hoping Sterling will make an effort on his side.
Under Pep Guardiola, the winger isn’t getting as much of a chance as he would like, and he’s open to a move in January if that doesn’t change. In that scenario, Barça is a good fit, and Xavi’s arrival makes it an even more appealing option, given the new coach’s open desire for more wide players.
Given that he will have spent half of the season at City, the Premier League club will accept half of his salary. The issue is that, even so, Barça requires the player to perform.
Xaci can only sign Dani Alves midseason if Barça spends 9 million on Sterling’s wages. Barça will offer the former Liverpool forward a lesser basic salary and variable bonuses. Barça may then loan Sterling and make another loan deal if needed.
But keep in mind that Barcelona will never commit to an obligatory buy option on Sterling.
