Joseph and Delia Batie, Andra Day’s parents, reared the multi-hyphenated lady in Southern California. Day’s stage name was inspired by jazz vocalist Billie Holiday, often known as Lady Day. Andra received her first Golden Globe in 2021 for her role as Billie in the film The United States vs. Billie Holiday. This was her acting debut, which she first turned down. Andra became just the second black musician to perform the “Black National Anthem,” “Lift Every Voice And Sing,” during Super Bowl 58. Andra Day, an American R&B and soul singer, was born to Joseph and Delia Batie on December 30, 1984. She is one of the couple’s four children, and they reared them in Southern California. In a previous interview, Andra said that singing skill runs in her family. She said that her mother, Delia, is a talented vocalist who is too bashful to perform. Delia spent many years working as a janitor at Chula Vista’s First United Methodist Church. Delia split from Joseph when Andra was 17, and they eventually divorced.
Today, Delia Batie is a writer who publishes children’s books under the name D.A. Battie. Delia wrote a book titled I Hear the Wind Blow and Wonder in 2021, and she has since embraced her writing seriously. Her father has a backyard grill-building company in Las Vegas. Andra’s mother lives with her in the San Fernando Valley. Andra had a successful year in 2021, winning her first Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Andra Day is from an African-American household and grew up in southeast San Diego. It was where the bulk of the Black people resided. The singer/actress already discussed how her family came to reside on the West Coast. She said that the Batie family and others south of Interstate 8 relocated there to work for or alongside the Navy’s large Pacific Fleet. When she won the Golden Globe in 2021, she became just the second Black woman to win the award for best actress in a drama film.
The first person was Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in The Color Purple in 1986. Andra’s song, Rise Up, which she penned when a friend was diagnosed with cancer, has now become an unofficial anthem for the Black Lives Matter movement. When asked what she thought, Andra stated she felt honored. She also said that the BLM movement aimed to stand up to tyranny and persecution.
