ABC News Sam Purcell, the head coach, and his wife, Meghan, have been happily married for over two decades. Meghan is his rock of support, offering strength and encouragement throughout their journey together. Sam Purcell is now the head coach for Mississippi State’s women’s basketball program.
The 2023-24 season will be his second year as head coach of Mississippi State’s women’s basketball program.
Before joining the Mississippi State coaching staff, Purcell garnered excellent experience at Louisville, where he worked for nine seasons under the acclaimed Jeff Walz. Purcell was instrumental in the team’s success throughout his tenure at Louisville, helping the Cardinals to an outstanding 266-48 overall record and eight NCAA Tournament berths. His impact extended to four ACC Regular Season Championships and the 2018 ACC Tournament victory, which was a noteworthy success for Louisville since it was the team’s first tournament win since 1993.

Sam Purcell, an Auburn University alumni, has been happily married to Meghan for more than 17 years. On August 5, 2006, the pair celebrated their togetherness by exchanging wedding vows. Sam and Meghan are delighted parents to three daughters: Reese, Rylee, and Reagan. While little information about Meghan Purcell’s school and professional history is accessible, she maintains an active Facebook page. Meghan routinely shares glimpses of her family life, sharing photos of her husband and children, capturing the pleasure and love that characterizes their family dynamic.
‘You Live for These Moments’
The Bulldogs defeated the reigning national champions, No. 9-ranked LSU, 77-73, with strong performances on both ends of the floor. The historic occasion took place in front of a crowded Humphrey Coliseum, which hosted 9,121 Maroon and White devoted members, marking the first sellout at home during the Sam Purcell era. Reflecting on the huge support, Purcell acknowledged his surprise upon arriving at the coliseum, remarking,
“I looked up at the Hump and saw a queue ready, and I was dumbfounded. I was like, “This is what I dreamed of.”
Mississippi State did not disappoint its supporters, who had shown them great dedication. This victory marked the first time LSU had consecutive defeats since the 2021-22 season, after their loss to No. 1 South Carolina on Thursday. As a consequence, the Tigers’ record dropped to 18-4 (5-3 SEC), while Mississippi State improved to 17-5 (4-3). Purcell summed up the importance of the occasion, saying, “This is everything you dream of. “You live for these moments.”
