Jared Schutz Polis, also known as Jared Polis, is a well-known American politician, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who has served as Colorado’s 43rd governor since January 2019. He is a Democrat who served on the Colorado State Board of Education for one term from 2001 to 2007 and five terms as the United States Representative for Colorado’s 2nd congressional district from 2009 to 2019. During his service in Congress, he was the sole Democratic member of the libertarian-conservative Liberty Caucus. In 2018, he defeated Republican nominee Walker Stapleton for governor of Colorado.

Polis is the son of greeting card and book publisher Blue Mountain Arts founders Stephen Schutz and Susan Polis Schutz. In 1975, he was born in Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder, Colorado. As a high school student, he lived in San Diego, California, and graduated from La Jolla Country Day School in three years with various distinctions. Princeton University awarded him a Bachelor of Arts in politics. He legally changed his surname to his mother’s in 2000 to attract notice for fundraising and simply because he “liked it better.”
