Gary Richard Herbert (born May 7, 1947) is the 17th and current Governor of Utah, having taken office in 2009. He was a Republican who chaired the National Governors Association during the 2015-2016 election cycle.

Herbert Richard Peters was born on May 7, 1947, in American Fork, Utah, to Carol and Paul Richard Peters. When he was a child, his parents separated, and his mother quickly remarried Duane Barlow Herbert, who formally adopted him. Herbert’s original father remarried as well, but he and his paternal half-siblings were reared in separate families and had little contact with one other. Governor Herbert grew up in the Utah town of Orem. He attended Orem High School and served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States Mission. Later, he attended Brigham Young University but did not complete his studies.

Gary Herbert was a member of the Utah Army National Guard for six years, rising to the rank of staff sergeant. Following his tenure in the National Guard, he established Herbert and Associates Realtors.
Herbert served as president of both the Utah Association of Counties and the Utah Association of Realtors. Mrs Herbert ran The Kids Connection, a childcare agency.
Herbert began campaigning for the Republican nomination for Governor of Utah in November 2003.
Herbert joined forces with then-rival Jon Huntsman, Jr. in April 2004, a month before the state convention where the gubernatorial nominee would be chosen, becoming the latter’s running partner.
At the convention, the Huntsman-Herbert ticket upset incumbent governor Olene S. Walker before going on to win the November election. Herbert was later appointed lieutenant governor.
