In the late 1970s, Nancy competed and won Miss Florida in 1976. She then competed in the Miss America Pageant in 1977, along with other competitors. Her initial job was as a public relations professional before getting signed as a model by the New York agency Ford Model Agency. Stafford made his film debut in 1982 as Eyewitness in Q: The Winged Serpent (Crime Mystery). From 1983 until 1986, she portrayed Joan Halloran in the TV series St. Elsewhere. She portrayed Judge Bell in Judging Amy (TV Series) in 2003. She was also featured in 2008 as Rosemary Tennant in The Mentalist (TV Series).
