Career
The Black Oak guitarist had been with the rock band since its inception in the 1960s when he joined forces with Ronnie Smith (OG vocals), Harvey Jett (guitar), Stanley Knight (guitar), Pat Daugherty (bass), and Wayne Evans (drums)… eventually replacing Ron with their famous frontman, James Mangrum, who stayed for the long haul. They had a lot of popularity in the 1970s with songs like “Uncle Lijiah,” “Lord Have Mercy on My Soul,” “When Electricity Came to Arkansas,” and others. That last tune became divisive; evidently, basic Christians believed it carried concealed Satanic undertones.
1973 was even better for them since it saw the release of their fourth and fifth albums… It included even more famous songs such as “Hot Rod,” “Up,” “Gigolo,” and probably their best-known tune, “Jim Dandy (To the Rescue),” a reworking of LaVern Baker’s 1957 classic. Reynolds was with the band during this apex of their success, but he left about 1976 as they closed out the 1970s. However, in the 1980s, RLR rejoined the band… They made a couple more albums, but James had left for a while.
